Hacienda Don Francisco, the Gaviña Family Ranch

Dear Pedro Pan Brothers and Sisters

The sun breaks through the early morning mist warming the skies over the San Gabriel Mountains... just in time for the festivities!

Over 300 Pedro Pan, family and friends gathered this afternoon at the Hacienda Don Francisco in Acton, California for the second annual reunion of the Cuban Kids from the 60’s Exodus at the Gaviña Family Ranch.

A relaxing afternoon to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, and partake in the activities throughout the day, enhanced by the picturesque Southern California setting. The horse rides for the kids and the Paso Fino ridding exhibition were the hit of the day.

Of course let’s not forget the delicious Cuban delicacies prepared by master chef Tony Hernandez and his crew. It was outstanding!

Sergio Diaz kicked off the brief formal program, introducing the Gaviña Family who welcomed all to Hacienda Don Francisco.

Ramon Coro and Enrique Garcia presented the Gaviña family with a domino table and a set of dominos, as Estela Bueno, Irene Martinez Ceballos, and Angie Rodriguez presented flowers to the Gaviña ladies as a token of appreciation for their hospitality.

Berta Freire was “pin happy” as she pinned Agustin and Mayra Prado with our logo, designed by Agustin, as well as many others who have helped our reunions.

Aldo Montoto presented Brian Reed with a plaque and certificate in appreciation for all the assistance he has given us.

Enrique Garcia did a terrific job capturing the difficulties experienced by all Pedro Pan when leaving families behind and immigrating to the United States, which let us to the highlight of our get-together the Pedro Pan introductions.

Numbering 53, including Clara Bernhard all the way from Seattle, Washington, the Pedro Pan kids gathered for a group picture and to lend support for the self introduction of the Pedro Pan attending an event for the first time. A very emotional moment when we share our Pedro Pan experience with our fellow brothers and sisters.

Arturo Bueno closed the program introducing the young ladies of the Club Cultural Cubano who attended the event.

It takes the contribution of many to pull off an event like this, but I would be remiss if I did not extend a heartfelt appreciation to everyone out there who worked so hard to make this event an unqualified success!
